Frequently Asked Questions

1. What inspired you to take up bird photography?

Growing up on a farm instilled a deep appreciation for nature in me. I express this through photography. I really enjoy hiking and seeing new natural areas. The way birds’ songs can fill a space naturally drew my attention.

2. What equipment do you use for photography?

I use a Panasonic FZ1000M2 zoom bridge camera (now discontinued) with a fixed Leica zoom lens, stabilizer, a one-inch sensor, a viewfinder, programmable function buttons (focus) and takes images in RAW or JPG. The camera is comfortable to operate with one hand, but I do wear an over-the-shoulders harness. I dress for the weather wearing a Tilley hat in the summer, and in winter water-wicking long-johns (warm), a toque plus fingerless gloves.

3. Where do I find the birds to photograph? Go to where the birds are!

4. How can I support your birding hobby?

You support me by commenting on my photographs; your feedback is appreciated. I welcome correction suggestions.

5. What advice would you give shoppers?

Try to buy more locally and, if possible, “Product of Canada” – at least 98% Canadian, or “Made in Canada” – at least 50% Canadian. This helps other Canadians and supports jobs in your community and the independence of our country.
